SOUTH WALTON

COMMUNITY COUNCIL

2020 BCC CandiDATE SURVEY

QUESTION #5:

Development Codes: In recent years, many variances and waivers have been given to developers of housing projects. In particular Planned Unit Developments (PUDs) have become a vehicle to avoid adherence to codes, increase density, and change the nature of our community. Do you support strict adherence to our Land Development Code and Comprehensive Plan?

Philip Cryar - District 1 - Republican

Yes, Planned Development Units increase density around 30a and cripple our current infrastructure. We need to implement stricter regulations for PUDs to decrease density and improve infrastructure along 30a by building a parking garage, if possible.

Lisa Johnson - District 1 - Republican

William "Boots" McCormick - District 1 - Republican

YES.

Mike Barker - District 3 - Republican

I absolutely support adherence to our Land Development Code and Comprehensive Plan. Variances should only be given in extreme circumstances and not a common practice. If we continue to give variances the way that they have been given, our codes mean nothing.

Teddy Stewart - District 3 - Republican

Debbie Heard - District 5 - Republican

YES! I participated in aspects of the recent Land Development Code & Comprehensive Plan changes. I believe there remains ambiguous language that must be addressed. Growth Management Plan for Florida tasks counties with implementing their comp plans to preserve the environment. Variances and waivers do not meet the vision the state of Florida sets forth in chapter 163 of Florida Statutes. These statutes guide local government development and economic growth in a way that will protect natural resources.

Dr. Carolynn Zonia - District 5 - Democrat

I believe many of our problems could be solved by simply adhering to our Comp Plan and Land Development Codes. What I’ve learned, is that you can’t wait until these come before the BCC to stop a bad development. I will appoint volunteers to the Planning and Design Review Boards to ensure that these Plans and Codes are followed, and to get me involved earlier in the process. To make a difference here will take more than a Commissioner who just shows up to vote. Please check out my testimony to the BCC asking them to reject the change in Land Development Code for the Forman property at https://www.drzforwaltoncounty.org/walton_county_character
