SOUTH WALTON

COMMUNITY COUNCIL

2020 BCC CandiDATE SURVEY

QUESTION #9:

Swimming Pool. Many Walton County citizens have asked repeatedly for an olympic size pool that can be used by schools, swim teams, and recreational users. What are your thoughts?

Philip Cryar - District 1 - Republican

I absolutely favor the building of an Olympic-sized pool in Walton County, even possibly, two. An Olympic-sized pool in North Walton would provide a much-needed recreational opportunity for the citizens and an Olympic-sized pool in Central/South Walton would serve as a hub for competitive swimming among grade schools. As a community that lives this close to the beach, it's baffling how we don't have an Olympic pool already.

All for it. We have a community pool at Freeport and I think it is one of the better monies the city spent.

Mike Barker - District 3 - Republican

More recreation is definitely need in Walton County. Funding sources should be actively sought out to include researching grant opportunities. I have personally written and received grant funding in Walton County for County parks and recreation. These included softball fields, fencing, buildings, and sitting areas. I believe that funding could very well be out there for recreational purposes such as this.

An aquatic facility would be a wonderful addition to our lifestyle in Walton County. I say we find the funding and go for it. Why would we not? Maybe a better question is why HAVE we not? A facility of this kind only makes for a better Walton County.

Dr. Carolynn Zonia - District 5 - Democrat

I support building an Olympic sized pool, and would suggest we include springboard dive facilities as well. We have a wonderful School district and a facility for swimming and diving should be available. I was very disappointed that the BCC voted against the Golf Garden acquisition. That could have been a great location for this type of facility.
